Additional $25,000 cash prize could be awarded to an SPN member
The Mackinac Center for Public Policy and James M. Rodney have established the Freedom in Fiction Prize with a top award worth up to $100,000. In addition, the State Policy Network member that identifies and sponsors the winning entrant will earn a $25,000 cash prize.
The Freedom in Fiction Prize "honors the best unpublished works of fiction with the greatest potential for imparting the ideas of free markets, liberty and personal responsibility across a wide audience in a positive manner."
Project manager and Mackinac director of advancement Justin Marshall states, "Few books, songs or movies champion entrepreneurs, markets, the private sector and charitable organizations. As for authors, Ayn Rand, J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis are probably the best known exceptions. To serve as an incentive and help reverse the tide, the Freedom in Fiction Prize was created."
The competition consists of two phases. First, entrants submit an opening chapter, one additional chapter of choice, and a book outline by January 1, 2008. The outline is to include a summary discussion of the major themes within the book and the major characters.
By March 31, 2008, up to 10 authors will be chosen to complete their manuscripts; each will receive a $1,000 check. These authors will have one year to finish his or her book, submitting it to the project manager by March 31, 2009. The winning author will be announced that June.
The winner will receive a $10,000 check for his or her manuscript. If the author chooses, he or she can then proceed to publish the book and qualify for the additional $90,000 prize by selling 10,000 copies within one year of its publication date.
Marshall lauds James M. Rodney for his instrumental role in establishing the Freedom in Fiction Prize. Rodney is chairman of the board for Detroit Forming, Inc. and president of the Rodney Fund. Marshall says, "Both Mackinac and Mr. Rodney see the Prize as one more incentive for authors to write a best-selling book that extols the principles of liberty."
