Built in 1853, the luxurious Mills House Hotel is located in the heart of Charleston's historic district. In 1860, Stephen Douglas used the Mills House Hotel as headquarters while attending the Democratic National Convention next door at Hibernian Hall. In 1861, Confederate General Robert E. Lee was a Mills House guest and watched Charleston's Great Fire from his headquarters on the second floor of the hotel.
