In 1860, Stephen Douglas used the Mills House Hotel as headquarters while attending the Democratic National Convention next door at Hibernian Hall. In 1861, Confederate General Robert E. Lee was a Mills House guest and watched Charleston's Great Fire from his headquarters on the second floor of the hotel.
